Everyday Essential Oils
When I say Everyday Essential Oils, I want to be clear upfront.  I’m not going to be telling you how a splash of clove oil will magically re-attach a severed limb or drinking 5 drops a day of Frankincense will cure cancer.  I have actually been a bit reluctant to write this post because there is just so much “mythinformation” out there about Essential Oils.
I was slow to embrace EO’s because there seemed to be a fine line between Camp A preaching how dangerous they are if used incorrectly, and Camp B renouncing all western medicine and claiming all ailments can be cured with them.
To be honest, I am not even sure what it was that got me over the line in trying them initially. It’s just that I was packing the other day to go bush for the weekend and I realised that I now pack a couple of EO’s as part of my travel kit. While I would never use EO’s instead of a first aid kit, there are 3 oils that I tend to bring along as a complement to it.  I thought it was time to share these oils and what I use them for.
Lavender Essential Oil
First up is Lavender EO. Â This is THE BOMB for dabbing on mozzie/midgee/insect bites, itchy rashes and general skin irritations. Â It takes the itch away and soothes inflammation. Â It might sting if there’s broken skin but the upside to that is that Lavender EOÂ also has antibacterial properties so it helps to prevent infections.
Lavender EO is one of the few essential oils that properly qualified aromatherapists will tell you can be applied neat, directly to skin and I absolutely use it this way, as well as in the diffuser and in a spray.
My daughter is allergic to mozzie bites and if I leave them untreated, they turn into big, angry, infected welts. Â If I rub a bit of lavender EO onto them whenever they start to irritate her, they are usually gone within 2-3 days and without any major scratching.
Also super handy when bushwalking to dab a bit of lavender EO onto any ankles that are itchy from brushing past irritating plants and grass!
Another thing I have used Lavender EO for is burns, including sunburn.  I know!  It sounds counter-intuitive to put oil on a burn.  Let me tell you, I have had first hand experience on more than one occasion that it works. You put it on ASAP after the burn has occurred.  Lavender EO takes the sting out of the burn faster than anything else I have ever tried.  That was a blessed relief the time I spilled the boilingest boiling water ever down my back (cup of tea in a travel mug with a loose lid chucked into my handbag and slung over my shoulder….I have special talents….).
I think most people are aware of Lavender EO’s calming, comforting, relaxing properties. Â It is excellent to spray or diffuse in the general vicinity of restless insomniacs of any age to help them get to sleep.
Tea Tree Essential Oil
Tea Tree EO is another essential oil that properly qualified aromatherapists will tell you can be applied neat, directly to skin and I make full use of this.
Tea Tree EO also has antibacterial properties so it is great for dabbing onto cuts and wounds if they need a clean out and you don’t have he facilities to clean them properly.
One of the things I like to do with Tea Tree EO is dab it onto random skin conditions. Â For example, several years ago my daughter got a little lump on her back. Â Sort of like a pimple crossed with a wart. Â A couple of months later it hadn’t gone away and off we went to the doctor. Â It turned out to be a molluscum contagiosum. Â A highly contagious skin condition that you have to leave alone or it will scar and that can take 2 years to go away.
I would like to congratulate myself here for not squeezing it even though it so desperately looked like it should be squeezed.  I thought I would have a go with tea tree EO.  I started dabbing some on each night after the bath.  Within a month, the lump had dried up and fallen off.  I was pretty happy with that result!
Tea Tree EO can also be used to help combat colds and flu and inflammation, particularly in the lower back. Â It is an excellent oil to add to blends for diffusing or massaging into the skin to ease congestion and pain caused by swelling.
One of the most common uses for Tea Tree EO in our house is as a deterrent for nits and lice! Â Whenever we are coming into lice season or a case has been reported in someone’s class, I spray some of this into the kids’ hair each day for a week or so as a repellent. Â I put about 10 drops into a 50ml bottle with some dispersant (to mix the oil and water) and then fill with water and spray away.
Peppermint Essential Oil
Last but not least is Peppermint EO. Â This is such a handy one to carry around all the time (unless you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or less than 3 years old).
Peppermint EO is brilliant for combating fatigue, headaches, shock, respiratory colds and nausea. Â A couple of drops on a cotton ball is very handy for sniffing:
- when you need a driver reviver
- when studying, to aid concentration
- for relief from a headache
- when you feel like you are going to vomit
- to help with travel sickness
- if you have a chesty cold and need to ease the congestion
- Sunday morning when you have a hang over and you need to get on with your day!
Although not recommended during pregnancy, peppermint EO is fabulous and safe to use during labour to help with the nausea. Â Peppermint EO is the quiet achiever and I am amazed at how often I use this one.
Mixing it Up
The suggestions I have made above are mostly ways you can use these 3 oils in their own. Â You can also blend these oils with other oils to increase the impact on whichever condition you are trying to combat. Â There are recipes for each of these oils in the photo gallery for that oil. Â You can follow the link from the oil headings above or head to the Aroma section of my website.
If you have any questions at all about these oils or any others, please get in touch. Â I don’t bite and I love to help.
ECZEMA, PSORIASIS, DERMATITIS? Here’s how Tri Nature can help.
Here’s how Tri Nature can help minimise or eliminate Eczema, Psoriasis and Dermatitis.
The quick and dirty on which Tri Nature products I have found that work for specific skin irritations.
Psoriasis on the head, back of neck and behind ears
Tri Nature Daily Care Shampoo and Daily Care Conditioner for those who like to wash and condition. These have helped either significantly improve or completely clear up scalp psoriasis for many of my customers. This S&C contain Chamomile and Marshmallow which can be very nourishing for the scalp and soothing for irritations. They do not contain soap, SLS or anything else that may cause irritation. The Daily Care S&C are suitable for all hair types of all ages.
For anyone who is a wash and condition in one sort of person, the Tri Nature 2in1 Shampoo Conditioner is perfect. It contains Rosemary which is extremely beneficial for the scalp. The 2in1 also does not contain soap, SLS or anything else that may cause irritation and is suitable for all hair types of all ages.
Eczema/dermatitis on hands:
- Tri Nature’s Handwash is full of coconut oil and is very moisturising. It doesn’t contain soap, SLS or any other chemical nasties so will not dry your hands. Use it all the time if possible (take some to work) and put it on neat at start of day to act as a barrier against dirt/oil/etc.
- Tri Nature’s Sanitising Hand Gel is full of vitamin E so won’t strip your hands. This product is very popular with nurses and childcare workers and if you have to use an Antibac gel, this is the one to use;
- Chamomile Dishwashing Liquid won’t take the natural oils out of your skin but it’s still tough on grease and dirt. It contains chamomile (which is very soothing and healing) and marshmallow extracts (works to actively bind broken skin).
- Soothing Lotion should be used as a daily (or more often) moisturiser. Containing Chamomile and Lavender to soothe and heal the skin, I have used this successfully on eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, nappy rash, heat rash and even to take the itch out of mozzie bites. This cream is light, so it still lets the skin breathe. And a little goes a long way.
Babies/Toddlers/Children
Babies, Toddlers and Children with dry skin or eczema/psoriasis/dermatitis may benefit from:
- Baby Bath and Soothing Lotion as chamomile and lavender (in both products) are very soothing and healing on the skin.
- An alternative to the Soothing Lotion is the Baby Massage Oil which also contains chamomile and lavender as well as coconut oil, jojoba oil and other natural oils.
If the child showers instead of bathing, use the Baby Bath as a body wash.
If there is a lavender allergy, use Chamomile Dishwashing Liquid instead of the Baby Bath. This is what many customers successfully used for years before baby range was released. Follow with Body Moisturiser.
Rashy skin in elbow joints and behind knees or on stomach
Use the kids body washes. If they bath, put some in when water is running to make bubbles. If they shower, a half to one pump on a soft body loofah is more than enough to wash whole body. The body washes will last a really long time as long as parents are responsible for dispensing them. Follow with Soothing Lotion to help clear up and prevent symptoms, or Body Moisturiser if there is a lavender allergy.
Teens with rash on the face or neck
It could be caused by shampoo, conditioner or skin products. For anyone prepared to commit to a skin routine, the Tri Nature Kyphi Skin Care range is excellent. Contact me for more information.
For those who will not stick to a skin routine, try Gentle Face Wash as a face cleanser and Recovery Gel to follow for soothing skin. The aloe and green tea extracts in this make it ideal for skin irritations, sunburn, burns, etc. I have also used soothing lotion on my face and my kids faces but keep away from eye area, just to be on the safe side. Replenishing balm for eye area works well (e.g. eyelids).
Eczema all over the body
I highly recommend Tri Nature Laundry Products and body washes. It is important with the laundry products, to finish or throw out whatever you are currently using, descale your machine thoroughly and then only use tri nature. The fillers and extenders from other products build up inside your machine over time. Tri Nature products loosen them and flakes may come out during the wash with Tri Nature. Descaling the machine will clean out any existing build up and ensure this does not happen. Using only Tri Nature will ensure no further build up in your machine in the future.
Tri Nature laundry powder has no fillers or extenders, it is a 100% concentrate and it dissolves completely in water and rinses away. There is nothing in it to irritate the skin, so there are no phosphates, nitrates, zeolites, chlorine, bleaches, petrochemicals, etc. It is the reason I use the products and has made a major difference in my life as well as that of hundreds of customers. Plus, it’s cheaper than most other brands!
There are several options for body washes. For people who like smells, there are luxurious shower balms in assorted scents (remembering that all smells are made from plants and essential oils, not synthetic perfumes). For those who prefer a more subtle fragrance, you can use the Tri Nature Handwash on your body.
It is loaded with coconut oil so is moisturising for the skin and totally suitable as an overall body wash. For extra sensitive skins and people who prefer no smell, Gentle Face Wash. It is also suitable as a body wash and scent free.
If you have questions about what would be best for you, please feel free to get in touch via email or phone and I would be very happy to discuss your options and see if I can help.
